Public Sector Workers' Compensation Claim

Goal

The primary goal of the Public Sector Workers’ Compensation Program is to respond to workplace injuries with the best, most appropriate medical care at a reasonable cost, and to return employees back to work as soon as medically possible.  Workers’ Compensation is a system of benefits provided by law for workers who have job-related injuries or illnesses.  Benefits are paid for injuries or illnesses that were caused by an employee’s work.  The District of Columbia Office of Risk Management oversees the management of the Public Sector Workers’ Compensation Program through the third party administrator, CorVel.

  • Wage loss benefits
  • Medical benefits
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Compensation for permanent loss of body part or function
  • Death benefits for dependents

Who’s Covered

  • An employee is eligible for benefits when covered while working or performing work tasks; when the injury or illness arises out of and in the course of his or her employment, including when traveling in a government vehicle or of mode transportation while performing District of Columbia business.

Return to Work

  • Return to work simply means helping employees get back to work as soon as possible after a job-related injury or illness.        
  • Return to Work is successful when there is communication between the injured worker and his or her agency, a key factor in his or her recovery.
  • Return to Work also keeps loss of productivity to a minimum.
  • There are three Return to Work options for injured employees:  (1) Alternative Work (2) Part-Time Work (3) Modified Work

How to File a Claim

  • Determine the facts and cause of the accident
  • In the event of a medical emergency, please have employee seek medical attention immediately
  • Employer reports the claim by calling (888) 832-2524 within 24 hours of occurance
  • Select medical care from a PPO Physician by calling (888) 832-2524, Provider Relations or CorVel
